National Review - By Stanley Kurtz - May. 31 (Review) - We’ve been hearing a good deal lately about Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s views on racial preferences, but what exactly is President Obama’s own position on this issue? Obama’s electrifying address to the 2004 Democratic National Convention led many to think of him as a "post-racial" politician. (Recall young Obama supporters chanting "Race doesn’t matter!" during the campaign.) A careful look at Obama’s record in the Illinois state senate, however, shows him to have been a highly conventional proponent of racial preferences. (See my piece, "Barack Obama’s Lost Years.") An article on Obama and minority hiring practices from the July/August 1990 issue of the Chicago Reporter casts new light on this issue. The report is actually a small "box" within a larger article on minority hiring at Chicago law firms. The box features a photo of the young Obama and the headline: "Top Student: What Kind of Minorities Do Firms Want?"

Barack Obama is the first African-American president, so the prime minister gave him an ornamental desk-pen holder hewn from the timbers of one of the Royal Navy’s anti-slaving ships of the 19th century, HMS Gannet. Even more appropriate, in 1909 the Gannet was renamed HMS President. The president’s guest also presented him with the framed commission for HMS Resolute, the lost British ship retrieved from the Arctic and returned by America to London, and whose timbers were used for a thank-you gift Queen Victoria sent to Rutherford Hayes: the handsome desk that now sits in the Oval Office.

The scent of money has attracted lobbyists for every interest group in Washington. Now comes word that Treasury secretary Henry Paulson might dip into the fund to bail out struggling automakers GM and Chrysler. If car companies can qualify for a piece of that $700 billion, then there are no theoretical constraints on its use.

The Obama Temptation

National Review - By Mark R. Levin - Oct. 25 (Opinion) - I've been thinking this for a while so I might as well air it here. I honestly never thought we'd see such a thing in our country - not yet anyway - but I sense what's occurring in this election is a recklessness and abandonment of rationality that has preceded the voluntary surrender of liberty and security in other places. I can't help but observe that even some conservatives are caught in the moment as their attempts at explaining their support for Barack Obama are unpersuasive and even illogical. And the pull appears to be rather strong. Ken Adelman, Doug Kmiec, and others, reach for the usual platitudes in explaining themselves but are utterly incoherent. Even non-conservatives with significant public policy and real world experiences, such as Colin Powell and Charles Fried, find Obama alluring but can't explain themselves in an intelligent way. There is a cult-like atmosphere around Barack Obama, which his campaign has carefully and successfully fabricated, which concerns me. The messiah complex. Fainting audience members at rallies. Special Obama flags and an Obama presidential seal. A graphic with the portrayal of the globe and Obama's name on it, which adorns everything from Obama's plane to his street literature. Young school children singing songs praising Obama. Teenagers wearing camouflage outfits and marching in military order chanting Obama's name and the professions he is going to open to them. An Obama world tour, culminating in a speech in Berlin where Obama proclaims we are all citizens of the world. I dare say, this is ominous stuff.
