MSNBC - By Tom Curry - Apr. 13 (News Analysis) - As the April 15 tax deadline approaches, two freshmen House members are offering a new version of a hardy tax code perennial: a six-month “holiday” from payroll taxes that they say would benefit both small businesses and the working poor.

Under the bill offered by Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., and Rep. Walt Minnick, D-Idaho, employers and employees of businesses with 50 or fewer workers would pay no Social Security and Medicare taxes for six months. Currently, both employers and employees are required to pay the 6.2 percent Social Security tax and the 1.45 percent Medicare tax throughout the year.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Which perhaps explains why American historians are consistently ranking George W.
MSNBC - Oct. 13 (News Report) - epublican John McCain, the clock ticking down on a chance to narrow Democrat Barack Obama's lead in polls, fended off comments Saturday comparing him to a well-known segregationist and attempted to pivot back toward policy differences.

Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and veteran of the civil rights movement, says the negative tone of the Republican presidential campaign reminds him of the hateful atmosphere that segregationist Gov. George Wallace fostered in Alabama in the 1960s.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

McCain mimics Bush on illegal wiretapping

MSNBC - By Keith Olbermann - Jun. 07 (News Report) - (VIDEO - 6:38) As with so many positions on which Senator McCain hues closely and precisely with the Bush administration, the Senator has tried to finesse the issue of warentless wiretaps. Finesse no more. The McCain camp now clearly saying the Senator believes what the current President believes, that the President of the U.S. can claim authority to wiretap Americans even where it contravenes a federal statute."

"In other words the President may break the law using amorphous Constitutional power as an excuse."

"The top advisor to Senator McCain set the record straight in a letter posted online by the conservative National Review this week. [The top McCain advisor] wrote that McCain believes the Constitution gave President Bush the power to order the National Security Agency to monitor Americas international phone calls and e-mails without a warrant. This, despite a 1978 Federal statute that specifically required court oversight of such surveillance."

"Furthermore, quoting him, 'neither the Administration not the telecoms need apologize for actions that most people except the ACLU and trial lawyers understand were Constitutiaonal and appropriate in the wake of the attacks on September 11, 2001.'"

"As for McCain, himself, saying about six months ago, 'I don't think the president has the right to disobey a law. ' It's notable that in the very same interview, he also said, 'there are some areas where the statutes don't apply such as the surveillance of overseas communications.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

RNC notes hypocrisy on Obama pledge

MSNBC - By Mark Murray - Jun. 06 (News Analysis) - On Thursday, Obama announced that the Democratic National Committee -- as his campaign does -- would no longer accept financial contributions from federal lobbyists.

"We will not take a dime from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs," he said. "We're going to change how Washington works. They will not fund my party. They will not run our White House."

But today, the Republican National Committee is noting all the holes in this pledge. In addition to the fact that Obama accepts money from employees of lobbying firms (as long as those folks aren't themselves federal lobbyists), the RNC points out that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee take money from lobbyists. Moreover, at least one prominent DNC member -- vice chair Lottie Shackelford -- is a lobbyist.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Barack Obama said Wednesday that he expected an organized Republican attack on his integrity and patriotism because "it's very hard for them to talk about where they want to take the country."

Obama, a first-term senator from Illinois, touched on a variety of issues in a wide-ranging interview with Brian Williams, anchor of "NBC Nightly News." Among them were what roles his defeated rival for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and her husband, the former president, might play in his campaign, as well as how soon he expected to debate his Republican opponent, Sen. It's also very difficult to have an understanding as a citizen about what levels of troops he's gonna keep there, because if he thinks 150,000 is pre-surge, and that's where he's gonna stay.
