Miami Herald - By Carol Marbin Miller - Jan. 27 (News Report) - With the blessing of her large extended family, Vanessa Alenier took custody of an infant relative who had been seized by child welfare workers. She moved him into a yellow nursery with a blond wood crib, a blue-striped carpet and a mobile. When she asked the state to for permission to adopt him, the application included a simple question. Are you gay? Alenier, 34, said she did not want to begin her journey as a parent with a lie. So she told the truth -- despite Florida's 33-year-old law banning gay men and lesbians from adopting. Earlier this month -- as a Miami appeals court determines the constitutionality of the embattled adoption ban -- a judge quietly approved the 1-year-old's adoption. The decision by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Maria Sampedro-Iglesia is the third finalized adoption by a gay couple within the last year.

Tensions mount as patience wanes

Western towns remained devastated and isolated, and Dominicans braced for refugees. Relief efforts struggled to get food, water and medicine to the hardest hit areas of the island on Friday, as security deteriorated amid a government vacuum and world leaders pledged more aid and personal visits to this devastated nation. There were reports of some looting in the capital, even as the U.S. military assumed control of the airport and helicopters airlifted supplies from a carrier off the coast. Evans Paul, former mayor of Port-au-Prince, summed up Haiti's two most urgent needs: ``We need rescue and security,'' he said. With the USS Carl Vinson stationed in the bay of Port-au-Prince, the commander of the U.S. military relief effort said personnel and supplies were moving into the country, though their distribution was hampered by impassible roads and a desperate population.

Just as signs of recovery appeared after a series of destructive storms and years of political upheaval, the earthquake that pummeled Haiti Tuesday inflicted incalculable damage and killed or maimed thousands. Among the prominent victims is the Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Msgr. Joseph Serge Miot, found dead in the ruins of his office.

Florida coalition targets pending federal pollution rules

If they're pregnant, they can be legally denied coverage. Women face other problems in today's insurance market: They tend to need more preventive care and therefore are subject to more co-pays and deductibles, and single heads of households are often women, meaning they're responsible for the family's healthcare bills. Legislation now being considered by Congress to overhaul America's healthcare system would dramatically change the rules, and there's general agreement that this is a problem that needs fixing.

As a former commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command, we knew that was a recipe for disaster. But we never imagined that we would feel duty-bound to publicly denounce a vice president of the United States, a man who has served our country for many years. In light of the irresponsible statements recently made by former Vice President Dick Cheney, however, we feel we must repudiate his dangerous ideas -- and his scare tactics.

When Miami-Dade County commissioners met for the first budget hearing Thursday, they needed to find a way to bridge a budget gap of more than $400 million. It won't be easy, and every expense should be evaluated. Among the cuts proposed by Mayor Carlos Alvarez in his budget is a slashing of $11 million to the arts in Miami-Dade. The argument being that when compared with basic social services, the arts just don't measure up. Of course they don't -- this is akin to comparing a grand piano to a house cat.
