Rejecting reform again would be folly, Dole says

Kansas City Star - By Barbara Shelly - Oct. 09 (Opinion) - Fifteen years ago, Bob Dole decided it was better to kill health care reform than to hand a Democratic president a historic victory.

Since then, praise be, he’s reformed his thinking.

In Kansas City this week, the former Republican Senate majority leader and presidential candidate added his voice — still strong at age 86 — to the push to help all Americans afford good health care.

“This is one of the most important measures members of Congress will vote on in their lifetimes,” Dole told an audience at the Liberty Memorial auditorium.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

In this economy, restaurateurs say, they want to give more value for the money. And stressed consumers seem to have a taste for such comfort food. Nairobi and all other urban centers are perennially short of water these days because of the depletion at the source. “That’s right, Missouri — John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you are facing that he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people ‘welfare.’ ”

Voters want solutions as health insurance costs rise sharply

Kansas City Star - By Suzanne King - Oct. 12 (Special Report) - Working two jobs isn’t exactly the way Dave Coffman envisioned his retirement.

But that’s how it’s turning out.

“I’m working basically because of health care,” said Coffman, 62, a retired school principal who lives with his wife in Lee’s Summit.

Until they qualify for Medicare, they have to buy private coverage. For now, their insurance bills amount to around $1,000 a month — including long-term care insurance, dental insurance and a health plan that has a $2,500 deductible. If he weren’t working two part-time jobs, Coffman said, there would be no way he could afford it.

“I never once thought about health insurance before I retired,” Coffman said.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Kansas City Star - By Scott Canon - Apr. 25 (Interview) - [Retired Army General Barry] McCaffrey regularly travels abroad on missions for the Pentagon to give military brass his assessment of conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. His most recent trip to Iraq was earlier this month.

He spoke with The Kansas City Star about his assessment of the Iraq war and its strain on the U.S. military. His answers have been edited for space and clarity.

What sort of evolution do you see to the war in Iraq?

We're in trouble.

The American people walked away from the war. I don't think they're coming back. Iraq's neighbors are bearing no good will toward a favorable outcome in Iraq.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
