My mission - and motivation

Jerusalem Post - By Richard Goldstone - Oct. 20 (Opinion) - I begin with my own motivation, as a Jew who has supported Israel and its people all my life, for having agreed to head the Gaza mission. Over the past 20 years, I have investigated serious violations of international law in my own country, South Africa, in the former Yugoslavia, in Rwanda and the alleged fraud and theft by governments and political leaders in a number of countries in connection with the United Nations Iraq Oil for Food program. In all of these, allegations reached the highest political echelons. In every instance, I spoke out strongly in favor of full investigations and, where appropriate, criminal prosecutions. I have spoken out over the years on behalf of the International Bar Association against human rights violations in many countries, including Sri Lanka, China, Russia, Iran, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

Column: Dressing up the Palestinian state

Jerusalem Post - By Gershon Baskin - Jun. 23 (Opinion) - Let us assume for a moment that the Palestinians accept all of Netanyahu's conditions - their state will be demilitarized, it will have no effective control of its external borders, its airspace, seaport, electromagnetic sphere. The Palestinians will agree to define the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people. The sovereignty of the Palestinian state will be more limited than the sovereignty of almost any other state. So be it (for the purpose of argument at least). Now Mr. Netanyahu, I have some questions for you regarding your vision of this Palestinian state.

Peled proposes Israeli sanctions on US

Peled said that shifting military acquisition to America's competition would make Israel less dependent on the US. For instance, he suggested buying planes from the France-based Airbus firm instead of the American Boeing.

Does Obama want a fight over settlements?

Or, as Netanyahu told a visiting Congressional delegation on Wednesday, there is a need to find a way with the US administration to enable "normal life" in the settlements to continue. If Obama says no settlements, but doesn't mention natural growth, leaving Clinton to do that, does that mean there is wiggle room? Nobody knows yet.

Obama won't deal with Hamas, 'Post' told

Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas, the chief national security spokesperson of the Obama transition team has told The Jerusalem Post. US President-elect Barack Obama "has repeatedly stated that he believes that Hamas is a terrorist organization dedicated to Israel's destruction, and that we should not deal with them until they recognize Israel, renounce violence, and abide by past agreements," said Brooke Anderson in a statement to the Post. Those conditions match the international Quartet's longstanding demands from Hamas, shared by Israel. The Obama spokesperson was responding to an article in Britain's Guardian daily on Friday, which asserted that three people with knowledge of discussions held in the Obama camp said that while the president-elect will not approve direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, his advisers are urging him to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, in light of the growing recognition in Washington that ostracizing the terror group is counter-productive policy.

Our job is to sell both sides, not to favor one or the other," according to Riz Khan, one of the most famous anchors on the Al-Jazeera English television channel. Khan, a former senior reporter and anchor for CNN and the BBC, spoke to The Jerusalem Post on Sunday evening after filming the first segment of his program on Israel's 60th anniversary. Broadcasting from a studio in Ramallah and one in Herzliya, the program makes an effort at neutrality. Its title includes neither the Israeli "independence" nor the Palestinian "nakba" (disaster), but what Khan believes is the more neutral "60 Years of Division."

Bush: Report on Iran a 'warning signal'

Bush declared Tuesday that his policy on Iran remained unchanged and pushed for continued international support to isolate Iran, even though his own intelligence agencies have found that Teheran ended its nuclear weapons program in 2003. The newly declassified National Intelligence Estimate report, released Monday, said Iran had halted its program in response to international scrutiny and pressure, but that the country was still attempting to enrich uranium. "I believed before the NIE that Iran was dangerous, and I believe after the NIE that Iran is dangerous," Bush told reporters at a White House press conference. "And I believe now is the time for the world to do the hard work necessary to convince the Iranians there is a better way forward." Despite concerns that the report will increase the hesitancy of many international players already reluctant to take harsh measures against Iran, Bush said "plenty of people understand that if they learn how to enrich, that knowledge can be transferred to a weapons program, if Iran so chooses."

'USAF struck Syrian nuclear site'

The Web site quoted Israeli and Arab sources as saying that two US jets armed with tactical nuclear weapons carried out an attack on a suspected nuclear site under construction. The sources were quoted as saying that Israeli F-15 and F-16 jets provided cover for the US planes.

Which is surprising enough, considering the fact that my father is Norman Podhoretz, whose entire professional life has been marked, if not characterized, by his being a highly controversial ideological warrior, first on the Left and then on the Right. Indeed, he was one of the founding fathers of what his detractors called "neoconservatism" - a label that has lived on in infamy, so to speak.
