Israeli professors are not sure yet how big of an impact the one-week-old movement will have, but started discussing the significance of and possible counteractions against the campaign.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 11 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

We are the prisoner who is stuck in a cell; without the help of others, we will never succeed in extricating ourselves from the bonds of our natural fear and the historical accounting. In other cases, a chain of explosions is initiated from a distance to set off Hamas booby-traps.
Thus are reports about the Mideast generated

Haaretz - By Emmanuel Sivan - Jun. 20 (Opinion) - Hersh wrote that the U.S. administration, embracing realpolitik, was siding with the Sunnis in their conflict with the Shi'ites. This led the administration to cooperate even with those who are hostile toward the United States, including groups linked to Al-Qaida. To back up his claim, Hersh wrote that the United States was transferring funds to the government of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, even though it knew some of the money was going to the Palestinian group Fatah al-Islam in the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon. (The article was published about two months before fighting broke out between Fatah al-Islam and the Lebanese army.)

Sharp-eyed reporters in Beirut read the article in astonishment. Siniora, of the Lebanese Sunni establishment, was assisting allies of Al-Qaida who had split off from a pro-Syrian organization? And the United States was aware of this and might even be planning it, in order to strike at Hezbollah? And all this was in the context of aid to the Sunni forces in the Middle East in their conflict with Shi'ites backed, according to Hersh, by Iran? A world turned on its head. A recent discussion in Washington raised the possibility that Jerusalem would ask the U.S. not to sell the satellite-guided smart bombs to the Saudis, but it was decided to reject this request.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Speaking to an audience at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington D.C., Thompson said that, "I'm in the private sector and for the first time in my life I'm earning money. You know that's sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that."
NewsTrust Rating: 2.8 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Haaretz - By Aluf Benn - Mar. 30 (News Report) - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert wants to start a dialogue with Saudi Arabia and other moderate Arab countries after the Riyadh summit again ratified the Saudi peace initiative.

In an interview appearing in the Haaretz supplement Week's End, Olmert said he would be happy to take part in a regional conference that would support direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

"A bloc of states is emerging that understands that they may have been wrong to think that Israel is the world's greatest problem. That is a revolutionary change in outlook," Olmert said.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

U.S. hardens line on talks between Jerusalem, Damascus

Haaretz - By Ze'ev Schiff, Amos Harel, Yoav Stern - Feb. 23 (News Report) - The United States demanded that Israel desist from even exploratory contacts with Syria, of the sort that would test whether Damascus is serious in its declared intentions to hold peace talks with Israel.

In meetings with Israeli officials recently, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was forceful in expressing Washington's view on the matter.

The American argument is that even "exploratory talks" would be considered a prize in Damascus, whose policy and actions continue to undermine Lebanon's sovereignty and the functioning of its government, while it also continues to stir unrest in Iraq, to the detriment of the U.S. presence there.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Given the constant erosion of the printed press, do you see the New York Times still being printed in five years?

Haaretz - By Akiva Eldar - Jan. 24 (News Analysis) - Dr. Saeb Erekat relates that when Bill Clinton visited Israel in 2004, he asked him why he blamed Arafat for the failure of the Camp David talks. Clinton, Erekat says, said Ehud Barak told him that if he blamed the Palestinians, it would help him (Barak) win the elections.

The smell of elections hovered over the 2000 Camp David talks. The only journalist invited to interview Clinton during the talks was from Newsday. Clinton didn't invite him to talk about Middle East peace, but to tell the Jewish readers why they couldn't manage without his wife in the Senate.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.6 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Haaretz - By Bradley Burston - Sep. 26 (Opinion) - 1. 'Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims.'

Perhaps the most often quoted of all chestnuts about terrorism, is the idea that it is solely a product of fundamentalist Islam.

2. 'One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.'

More of a half-truth than an out and out lie, given the propensity of supporters of one side to explain and forgive atrocities committed by that side, while condemning and often exaggerating atrocities committed by the other.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 7 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
