And at no time is this more visible than when mega climate/carbon events like Copenhagen come around. Most people are worried that the planet is under a lot of pressure, and many believe the climate is changing as a result. Considerably fewer have examined the science behind climate change, and fewer still the complex formulae that are at the heart of greenhouse-gas reduction targets.

But a controversy has arisen over the new seeds, which were approved for use last month by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Health Canada hasn't assessed their safety.

Following a ruling last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to forbid the sale of any domestic or imported food crops that have traces of the chemical carbofuran, Health Canada is proposing to “phase out all uses” of the pesticide.

His any remaining narcissism has surely been obliterated, so no need to pile on. But in the continental context, there's his impact on Canada. How does he measure up in bilateral terms against other presidents? The news isn't good. Mr. Bush may well go down as the worst president Canada ever knew. His chief bilateral legacy is something that cuts at the core of the relationship: his introduction of barriers at the border. Europe and Asia have been breaking down boundaries. But North America - as Michael Kergin, a former Canadian envoy to Washington, has pointed out - is "moving in a direction opposite to that of the rest of the world."

Globe and Mail - By John Ibbitson - Jan. 09 (Opinion) - Mr. Bush had real accomplishments. He made the U.S. a leader in the fight against HIV-AIDS and other diseases in Africa. He enacted landmark reform in public education. He extended Medicare to include prescriptions for seniors. And he will be remembered most favourably for what didn't happen: There were no terrorist attacks on U.S. soil after 9/11. But he also will be remembered for Iraq, for Katrina, for Guantanamo, for Wall Street. For these, he will forever rank among the least of presidents. Mr. Bush's greatest sin, the reason his statue should be consigned to someplace obscure, was undermining the Constitution he swore to uphold. It is intolerable that, on his watch and with his knowledge, U.S. officials tortured prisoners to extract information, suspected terrorists were held on U.S. soil without recourse to habeas corpus or a fair trial, and the Justice Department was debased.

No end in sight to bloody battle in Gaza

Globe and Mail - By Orly Halpern - Dec. 28 (News Report) - Israeli warplanes hammered smuggling tunnels, a central prison, a university and a government compound Sunday in day two of its aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian death toll rose to more than 300, making this the bloodiest weekend in fighting between Israelis and Palestinians since the 1967 war – and there is no end in sight. Israeli soldiers, tanks, and armoured personnel carriers began to mass around Gaza Sunday night. The Israeli cabinet approved calling up 6,500 reserve soldiers, but it remains unknown whether Israel will give a green light for a land invasion of Gaza. Most of the casualties were members of Hamas security forces, but at least nine women and 28 children under the age of 16 were among the dead, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, which has researchers at all hospitals. Across Gaza, dozens of Palestinian families set up mourning tents after burying their loved ones.
