Florida senator to resign seat

CNN - Aug. 07 (Breaking News) - Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Florida, will announce that he is resigning his seat, three GOP sources tell CNN. The sources said that Martinez will officially announce his intention to step down on Friday. The Florida Republican, first elected in 2004, announced in December of last year that he would retire in 2010. Florida law states that Gov. Charlie Crist may temporarily appoint someone to the vacant seat until the next general election. As of Friday morning, it was unclear what Crist would do. Crist announced in May he would not seek another term as governor, and instead would run for Martinez's seat.

Blue Dogs say they've reached a compromise on health care

CNN - Jul. 29 (Breaking News) - A group of fiscally conservative House Democrats announced Wednesday they reached a deal with the chamber's Democratic leaders on a health care reform bill. Rep. Mike Ross of Arkansas, speaking for the Blue Dog Democrats, said the agreement calls for the House Energy and Commerce Committee to begin debating the bill later Wednesday, but for no vote by the full House until after the upcoming August recess.

Michigan unemployment tops 15%

Business 2.0 - By Ben Rooney - Jul. 17 (Breaking News) - Michigan became the first state in 25 years to suffer an unemployment rate exceeding 15%, according to a report released Friday by the government. The state's unemployment rate rose to 15.2% in June. It was the highest of any state since March 1984, when West Virginia's unemployment rate exceeded 15%. Friday's report from the U.S. Labor Department also showed that unemployment topped 10% in 14 other states and the District of Columbia.

U.S. House votes overwhelmingly for Iranian resolution

CNN - By Paul Steinhauser, Deirdre Walsh, Peter Hamby, Dan Lothian - Jun. 19 (News Report) - The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday that says it supports "all Iranians who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties and the rule of law." The resolution was approved by 405 lawmakers, while one -- Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas -- voted against it. Two others, Reps. Brad Ellsworth, D-Indiana, and Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, voted "present." In a statement on his Web site, Paul said he voted against the measure because he is "always very cautious about 'condemning' the actions of governments overseas." "I have always hesitated when my colleagues rush to pronounce final judgment on events thousands of miles away about which we know very little," said Paul, who attracted attention last year during his unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination. "And we know very little beyond limited press reports about what is happening in Iran."

He targets black women, some working as prostitutes, and uses the same small-caliber gun. He shot a woman, a lone survivor, before pushing her out of his car. Nicknamed for taking a long break between attacks, the killer has left DNA and fingerprints, but police cannot find a name to match either. As detectives struggle to crack the haunting cold case, they say it's only a matter of time before he kills again.

Walk us through what the priorities are and when parents can expect to see results. DUNCAN: This is an extraordinary opportunity and if we want to become a strong economy again, the best thing we can do is have an educated work force. So this is a huge, huge opportunity to make things dramatically better for schools and for school children around the country and at the higher Ed level as well. So the stimulus package is going to do a number of things. It's going to help us a tremendous unmet capital needs and so it's really going to be a huge opportunity to invest in infrastructure and several ready projects that we want to get to work on very early on, late spring and through the summer. We want to save literally hundreds of thousands of teaching jobs. We're very, very worried about tremendous cuts, devastating cuts in school districts and states around the country. We want to stay those off going into the fall. We want to continue to raise the bar academically, raise standards, raise expectations, and there's opportunities in the stimulus package to do that.
