Chicago Sun Times - By Mary MItchell - Feb. 25 (Opinion) - ...Are the voices of the people in the South who put their faith in Obama's ability to rescue the economy to be ignored? When Jim Clyburn, the House majority whip, accused the Republican governors who are snubbing the stimulus funds of insulting African Americans, his remarks were widely misinterpreted. Clyburn didn't call anybody racist. What he did was point out that while Obama lost the white Southern vote, 95 percent of African Americans nationwide voted for him. And the black vote was key in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. With respect to Louisiana, Clyburn pointed out that Jindal has asked for millions for hurricane-ravaged communities...

Aides say she will visit other federal cabinet level agencies in the coming weeks. She was joined on stage by Education Secretary, Arne Duncan--she called him committed, hard working, passionate and fair. Duncan said that the Obama effect was going to be huge and that kids would say "I want to be smart like the President, I want to be smart like the first lady."

Blagojevich this afternoon said he's appointing Roland Burris to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat. "The people of Illinois are entitled to have two U.S. Senators," said Blagojevich, whose arrest on corruption charges earlier this month places Burris' appointment under a cloud. "If I don't make this appointment then the people of Illinois will be deprived."

President-elect Barack Obama, practitioner of consensus and preacher of civility, made a singular statement by choosing Rep. Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff, the first hire of the new administration. "Brilliant, hardworking, in some ways he may be a good yin to Obama's yang. But I was very surprised because he has a very different personality type from those around Obama," longtime Chicago political consultant Kitty Kurth said by phone Thursday. "I had first met Rahm after the '88 presidential campaign, on Mayor Daley's '89 mayoral race. He was always brilliant but a complete hardball player. The first six or seven times I met him, he never remembered who I was. . . . I never had anything he needed, so he didn't need to know who I was."

Barack Obama of being a product of the Chicago political machine. Convicted former Obama supporter Tony Rezko is among those referenced in the ad. That was Mayor Daley's angry message to Republican presidential nominee John McCain on Tuesday about the McCain ad that smears Daley's brother in an attempt to tie Barack Obama to the "corrupt Chicago political machine." In essence, Daley warned McCain that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. He was talking about McCain's role in the so-called "Keating Five" savings and loan scandal.

Chicago Sun Times - By Roger Ebert - Sep. 12 (Opinion) - I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin's appeal. She's the "American Idol" candidate. Consider. What defines an "American Idol" finalist? They're good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they're darned near the real thing. There's a reason "American Idol" gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! My problem is, I don't want to be up there. I don't want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq. Someone who doesn't repeat bald- faced lies about earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere. Someone who doesn't appoint Alaskan politicians to "study" global warming, because, hello! It has been studied. The returns are convincing enough that John McCain and Barack Obama are darned near in agreement.

Barack Obama's wife and three close advisers have been involved with a program at the University of Chicago Medical Center that steers patients who don't have private insurance -- primarily poor, black people -- to other health care facilities. Michelle Obama -- currently on unpaid leave from her $317,000-a-year job as a vice president of the prestigious hospital -- helped create the program, which aims to find neighborhood doctors for low-income people who were flooding the emergency room for basic treatment. Hospital officials say such patients hinder their ability to focus on more critically ill patients in need of specialized care, such as cancer treatment and organ transplants.

New University of Chicago research says, in general, people grow happier as they grow older. "With age comes happiness,'' writes U. of C. assistant professor of sociology Yang Yang in the April issue of American Sociological Review. Among the possible reasons: increasing job satisfaction and more settled personal lives. While health problems may increase, they are offset somewhat by fewer youth-related stresses such as broken hearts, entry-level paychecks and angst, researchers say.

Hillary Rodham Clinton faces an uphill fight to keep her presidential hopes alive. And several people from Chicago connected to Obama -- with the major figure being the indicted Tony Rezko -- could provide material his foes can use. If Obama wins the nomination, he will face an onslaught from presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) as well as the Republican National Committee, with a research and press operation churning out e-mails about Obama's record. Here's a look at some of the Chicago people who are already in play: Rezko's trial on corruption charges starts Monday. Rezko has a longtime relationship with Obama. Any mention of Obama in the trial -- he is a side figure -- could have political ramifications for Obama and be grist for ads. While Obama's connections to Rezko have long been the subject of stories in the Chicago newspapers, the trial is the peg for other news organizations to be doing their own examinations.

Now, their gang graffiti is showing up 6,400 miles away in one of the world's most dangerous neighborhoods -- Iraq. Armored vehicles, concrete barricades and bathroom walls all have served as canvasses for their spray-painted gang art.
