Charlotte Observer - By Mike Drummond - Jan. 07 (Advocacy) - Pregnancy-discrimination complaints rose 14 percent between 2000 and 2005, even as sexual harassment and racial-bias claims dropped. Preliminary numbers for 2006 remain on par with last year, an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission spokesman said. In the Carolinas, pregnancy-discrimination complaints have jumped 35 percent since 2000.

Charlotte Observer - Jan. 01 (Editorial) - Mr. Edwards' eagerness and enthusiasm for pressing the debate on social issues distinguish him as a candidate willing to take clear stands on human needs at a time when most candidates are courting the middle class. How this strategy will work politically is unclear. Other potential Democratic contenders, including Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, will compete in the 2008 primaries for the same voters -- and many of the same financial contributors -- as Mr. Edwards.
