'Blasphemer' attacked in Pakistan

BBC News - Aug. 08 (News Report) - An angry crowd in southern Pakistan attacks the house of a woman accused of desecrating the Koran, police say. Police officials said the woman was taken into protective custody minutes before protestors broke into her house. It is the latest in a series of attacks on religious grounds. On Saturday seven Christians were killed for allegedly desecrating the Koran. Hundreds of people have been lynched since the mid-1980s when blasphemy laws were introduced in Pakistan. The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says there is recurring evidence that people have sought to settle personal scores with victims by inflaming religious feelings.

Cold fusion debate heats up again

BBC News - Mar. 23 (News Report) - The long-standing debate about cold fusion is receiving new impetus at the American Chemical Society's national meeting in the US this week. Cold fusion, first announced 20 years ago on Monday, was claimed to be a boundless source of clean energy by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. Attempts to replicate their experiments failed, but a number of researchers insist that cold fusion is possible. The meeting will see several approaches that claim to produce fusion power. The American Chemical Society has organised sessions surrounding the research at its meetings before, suggesting that the field would otherwise have no suitable forum for debate. In a bid to avoid the negative connotations of a largely discredited approach, research in the field now appears under the umbrella of "low-energy nuclear reactions", or LENR. Gopal Coimbatore, ACS program chair for an LENR session at the 2007 national meeting, said that "with the world facing an energy crisis, it is worth exploring all possibilities".

A statement read by a Hamas spokesman said the group would hold fire for a week to give Israel time to withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip. The move came hours after a unilateral Israeli ceasefire came into effect. Israeli security sources say a gradual withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip has started. Earlier, there was more rocket fire from Gaza into Israel.

Many people have already made up their minds. For them, the invasion of Iraq was enough to put Mr Bush high on the list. And that was compounded by his lack of action elsewhere - with global warming and Hurricane Katrina as examples. Others will want to wait a bit and see what history decides. History can improve the image of a presidency.
