BBC News - Aug. 08 (News Report) - An angry crowd in southern Pakistan attacks the house of a woman accused of desecrating the Koran, police say.

Police officials said the woman was taken into protective custody minutes before protestors broke into her house.

It is the latest in a series of attacks on religious grounds. On Saturday seven Christians were killed for allegedly desecrating the Koran.

Hundreds of people have been lynched since the mid-1980s when blasphemy laws were introduced in Pakistan.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says there is recurring evidence that people have sought to settle personal scores with victims by inflaming religious feelings.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Pakistan's South Waziristan puzzle

BBC News - Jul. 27 (News Analysis) - What is Pakistan's government up to in South Waziristan?

Since the middle of May, the army has been conducting a military offensive against Pakistan's Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud - whose hideout lies in the mountainous terrain there.

But unlike the recent operation in the Swat valley, it says it has refrained from going all out against the militants so far.

The reasons for this are not exactly clear.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Cold fusion debate heats up again

BBC News - Mar. 23 (News Report) - The long-standing debate about cold fusion is receiving new impetus at the American Chemical Society's national meeting in the US this week.

Cold fusion, first announced 20 years ago on Monday, was claimed to be a boundless source of clean energy by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons.

Attempts to replicate their experiments failed, but a number of researchers insist that cold fusion is possible.

The meeting will see several approaches that claim to produce fusion power.
The American Chemical Society has organised sessions surrounding the research at its meetings before, suggesting that the field would otherwise have no suitable forum for debate.
In a bid to avoid the negative connotations of a largely discredited approach, research in the field now appears under the umbrella of "low-energy nuclear reactions", or LENR.

Gopal Coimbatore, ACS program chair for an LENR session at the 2007 national meeting, said that "with the world facing an energy crisis, it is worth exploring all possibilities".
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

BBC News - By Mark Easton - Feb. 02 (News Report) - The aggressive pursuit of personal success by adults is now the greatest threat to British children, a major independent report on childhood says.

It calls for a sea-change in social attitudes and policies to counter the damage done to children by society.
Family break-up, unprincipled advertising, too much competition in education and income inequality are mentioned as big contributing factors.
A panel of independent experts carried out the study over three years.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

BBC News - Jan. 25 (News Report) - The BBC is continuing to resist pressure over its decision not to air an appeal for aid to Gaza, as the Archbishop of York joined its critics.

Rival channels ITV, Channel 4 and Five have now agreed to show the DEC appeal.

Director general Mark Thompson has said by airing the appeal the BBC would risk reducing public confidence in its impartial coverage of the conflict.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.4 average - 7 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

A statement read by a Hamas spokesman said the group would hold fire for a week to give Israel time to withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip.

The move came hours after a unilateral Israeli ceasefire came into effect.

Israeli security sources say a gradual withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip has started. Earlier, there was more rocket fire from Gaza into Israel.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

How does the Bush presidency rate?

BBC News - By Paul Reynolds - Jan. 09 (Opinion) - I suppose the underlying question here is whether George W Bush has been one of the worst US presidents.
Many people have already made up their minds.
For them, the invasion of Iraq was enough to put Mr Bush high on the list. And that was compounded by his lack of action elsewhere - with global warming and Hurricane Katrina as examples.
Others will want to wait a bit and see what history decides. History can improve the image of a presidency.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 7 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
