She, with other politically minded Anchorage college students and even some local high schoolers, are banding together to reform the way sex education is taught around the state. They're reversing roles and telling their parents and school administrators that kids need more safety talk, not less. Their goal: mandatory comprehensive sex ed in high school. It would be a radical shift from the hands-off approach Alaska takes, which leaves sex ed to individual school districts.

Ted Stevens' home. That bombshell, a side issue to the main event, came as one of a number of developments Monday in the public corruption trial of former state Rep. Vic Kohring, a Wasilla Republican...U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens' official residence, a home in Girdwood, doubled in size during a renovation overseen by Veco in 2000. The Daily News reported in May that the remodel, and Veco's role in it, were part of the far-reaching, ongoing investigation into public corruption in Alaska. In July, FBI and IRS agents spent nearly 12 hours searching the house and documenting the addition. Stevens has denied wrongdoing and has said he paid the bills that were given to him.

Contractor Robert Williams is a key witness in a bribery investigation that stretches from Alaska to Capitol Hill and threatens legal and political headaches for the Senate's longest-serving Republican. The FBI is investigating whether Stevens received illegal gifts from Veco Corp., the once powerful Alaska oil contractor.

Murkowski to sell back Kenai property

Lisa Murkowski said this morning that she and her husband intend to sell back their Kenai riverfront property to Anchorage businessman Bob Penney. Murkowski announced the give back a day after a Washington watchdog group filed a 15-page Senate ethics complaint against her, alleging that Penney sold the property well below market value. The transaction amounted to an illegal gift worth between $70,000 and $170,000, depending on how the property was valued, according to the complaint by the National Legal and Policy Center.

Pipeline shipping rates rise again

Anchorage Daily News - By Sam Bishop - Jan. 06 (News Report) - Federal regulators have let owners of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline boost what they charge to ship oil through the line, but shippers could get refunds from the owners later if the government determines the rates are too high. All five pipeline owners announced last month that they would increase their shipping rates for Outside-bound oil starting Jan. 1 by as much as 40 percent. The state of Alaska and two nonowner oil companies appealed to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to block the increase.
