I saw the entry on Web 2.0 websites on Boing Boing years ago, comparing Newstrust to Digg. I found the idea behind Newstrust to be worthy. But it's only recently that I've been able to put more thought into what I consider to be good journalism.

An unbalanced, unfair view of events. The piece does not even mention that former Prime Minister Mahathir has rejoined the ruling party after falling out with his successor: a milestone of sorts. Two quotes in the piece: one from a truck driver, another from the Trade Minister. Neither capture the sense of anticipation that seems to be running through the country right now.

Not many experts cited, although it is an opinion piece. The writer is addressing the education system without a firm grounding of the social issues that lead to the creation of the current system. It is widely understood that the current system is unworkable. As a talking point, the movement to remove the English-teaching policy has certainly put education reform back in the news.

The best argument against the current policy is that it isn't effective. This is symptomatic of larger problems in education like unskilled ... More »

It's useful to know what's going on in Somalia. Not a great deal of sources. But Gettleman being East Africa Bureau Chief of NYT, he knows what he's talking about. The mix of viewpoints is also useful. Gettleman shifts from one aspect of the problem to another, from history to politics, with ease. A few personal anecdotes that are devastating.

Schjeldahl doesn't show his work. But with the current lawsuits between Fairey and the AP, I want to know what all the fuss is about. Drawing a parallel between Fairey and Warhol gave me a sense of who both artists are, without drawing the parallel out too far.

The articles strength lies in its range of sources, from military databases to key personal accounts. It is helpful that the writer contextualizes the issue with Mr Olmert's ceasefire announcement. Although the type of injuries are not new, context on Dime bombs (shouldn't it be DIME bombs?) makes this article a standout.

Although Mr Olmert’s announcement was only a first step towards halting the conflict in Gaza, the UN is not the only international body insisting that inquiries must ... More »

You get a little context on the IWF, an organisation I'm unfamiliar with. I would have liked a broader scope on internet censorship in Britain. Judging by the way it's written, I'd say the article is merely get the issue out.

The system run by the IWF, which is a self-regulated organisation, is used by most of Britain’s ISPs to screen out illegal content. The ... More »

The recent Malaysian government intervention in the equity market is put into context of the global credit crisis. I'm not sure how sound the economic thinking is, but I felt lost at times. It is especially difficult to get the writer's point when he mixes his metaphors. Admittedly this has been written for a local audience. I am unsure of the thinking behind erecting a early credit warning system and it doesn't seem backed up by the rest of the article.

A deeper examination of the current Malaysian economy, would have been appreciated. For example, some of the decisions that lead to the fund ... More »

Connects the dots for the casual reader in scholars' thinking but, I felt, should compare the 1993 healthcare plan and Obama and McCain's proposals. Anyways, the article primarily examines certain points in Obama and McCain's policies. It was helpful to have sense which policies scholars agreed with. It was also great to know where there is an academic consensus on certain points.

This is the first Chronicle article I've ever read. It organises information well. However, it's unclear to me how an employer mandate to insure ... More »

In this well-organised article, it would have been nice to have a greater sense of Shirin Ebadi's effect on Iran society. As the Nobel Prize has recently come under fire for being a politicised award, the legitimacy of Ebadi's award could have been addressed since she is a controversial figure.

The article indicates that the Iranian government has always worked counter to Ebadi's interests and it has been asserted that she drafted an act ... More »

I found this article provided a lot of context on one part of the issue. What information there is is informative, I did not know that non-emergency treatment in ER drives up the cost of healthcare. However I wish the article better explored the reasons that the poor and young recipients of subsidized healthcare are less likely to see a primary care doctor. Rather, the article focuses on what the insurance and managed care companies are doing to stem rising health care costs. Surely ... More »

The article is an enjoyable portrait of the character of Mr. Biden, although the tone of the article is casual and most of the evidence is anecdotal.

The article is responding to comments McCain has made recently, targetting Wall Street as an area of urgent reform. The writer sounds, naturally, outraged. It is a thorough article and refers to past Mother Jones articles and original research, but contains one outside source (a Democratic National Committee report, funded with public money). It fails to turn the same scrutiny on Obama's camp.
