The data and the details from the analysis and research make this a worthy article. It provides a great insight into the workings of a corrupt industry.
The research reveals targeting of the weakest elements of the economy by the lenders. This effort by the subprime industry indicates not only a ... More »
Explaining what is going on in the simplest terms possible, without sacrificing facts, is a journalistic achievement.
Excellent insight into the terrible situation, my only question is, how is this so very different than what the USA did to Afghanistan and Iraq? ... More »
My personal view is that Israel is imitating the USA in performing outright acts of murder such as we have done in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Good journalism tells what happened, this accomplishes that with facts and quotes from the people involved.
A great story, in the true spirit of the season, it is heartwarming and inspiring - this artist reflected the hopes of many, and she took a risk ... More »
This is good because it provides information in a format that is easy to skim through - and you only want to skim because after the first two or three it becomes sickening. The exploitation of the voter by the manipulative choice of this person for VP is glaring. The GOP is so entrenched in their parallel universe that they are ready to shove yet another Dick Cheney down our throats.
This is a good article detailing the latest in a long list of outrages by those who have figured out that shock has value with the desensitized amurrican public. If the people of this country were not so numbed down, they wouldn't need the shocks to stimulate. If people didn't turn their dials to the stations that support the shock jocks, they would go away. Boycott and market forces are the solution to the problem stated in this story. As long as people are willing to listen, the ... More »
This is a right on article that clearly addresses the mythology about TV advertising in presidential politics. It would be fun to find a survey or study organization that would track the number, if any, of people who actually watch a TV ad and say, "that's it, I am voting for that person for president because of the ad I saw on TV". This nation is so past that, TV ads are like white noise, they exist, but who notices?
We are all thinking about rail and other forms of transportation these days, so there is a value to putting information in print. Perhaps more in depth and less ranty would be more enlightening for us all.
Ick. We need much less of this trying-to-be-clever reductionism. The process is diminished enough without indulging in a writer's 'mortal combat' style of entertainment via clever phrasing and vocab choices. I didn't even finish reading it.
This is an attempt by an author with a vested interest to defend her investment in her candidate. There is a difference between quitting and facing reality and this author ought to know better. She chooses to frame her argument in a sports analogy that is contrived and transparent. Hilary Clinton needs to demonstrate dignity and class by facing the inevitable. To continue on, exhorting patriarchal models such as "quitters never win" and dragging the situation out to a more dismal ... More »
Excellent informative and comprehensive look at a situation that needs attention - interesting to note that the root of this problem goes back to old Ronnie Reagan, who prior to this current president, held the title for wreaking havoc on American life and society and progress.
This magazine seems to have jumped on the "provacative headline" bandwagon...it gets irritating after a while.
This article provides insights into the degeneration of the campaigns. They are getting chippy with each other, Senator Clinton using subtle and derogatory shadings in her remarks - calling Senator Obama by his first name, and stating that she believes she will capture the women's vote. Signifying segregation of the vote by gender?
The 1910 White Slave Traffic Act??? who knew? This article is excellent and asks the big questions: How did the Justice Dept. determine the necessity of pursuing this case? What amount of resources were spent on this one case and why? What does the ratio of 5 to 1, Dem to Gop investigations tell us ?
The topic is an important one. the effectiveness of the formula used by Connerly will be of interest to others who have issues to promote. If he is successful, setting a precedent for using a non-profit shield will be as effective as wiping out affirmative action.
Here's another perspective: if you use college students in your testing, and money is a reward, the results will skew towards whatever it takes to get the money. This article is a waste of time. Short on details and sketchy conclusions. I guess the NYT is hard up for filler.
Knowledge is power - and history as presented here provides the necessary information to keep unraveling the threads to explain what happened to the USA under the Bush regimes.
As the world watches the new "warsaw ghetto" is created by the very people who suffered the exact same hardships and indignities. The silence is deafening.
This stands out for several reasons: 1. It is a news piece that doesn't start with "how will you spend your money"? which is the approach of all the corporate newschains 2. It points out the reality about women workers regarding unemployment benefits and the 70 year old premise that raises barriers to women's access to the funds 3. It reveals President Bush's veiled threat in the state of the union address
Fluffy puff piece - one expects more coming from a source called Scientific American. Basic information is provided but it really skims the surface and ends with a big smiley face. Yawn.
This is excellent -especially the list at end - the information about which fruits and vegetables are most contaminated is very helpful. Organic produce is pricey, but then, treatment for the puzzling ailments in children that may be a sign of too much accumulated toxins in their systems has a much more significant cost. The other point of note: the EPA sure ain't what it used to be! It is another example of a government agency that has been turned off course from its mission.
Good journalism at its best - the only show worth watching on the lie emitting appliance known as television.
For those who are tracking the activities of the former President, this piece is good for taking a reading of "where he is now" and for predicting "what he will do next". Best guess: the negative is backlashing, so the next strategy against Obama will be softer kinder and condescending. Just a guess.
Lots of concepts here in a much too abbreviated piece - ideas about activism via art, art being made in places where it isn't likely to be seen, art in places where people may not want to see it....graffiti is just one aspect of what is presented here. Why is it such a short piece?

Statement by Robert Greenstein: Reported Stimulus Package Would Provide Little Immediate Boost Due to Removal of Most Effective Provisions, 1/24/08

Clear and concise statements of fact on any subject are a gift these days. The Democrats in Congress would be wise to heed the information contained here. Maybe they could retitle it: It's About the State's Budgets Stupid".
This is not worth reading - too much of an author having fun with an extended metaphor. The author's fascination with her concept gets in the way and is a disservice to the message about human needs. Ultimately it is a comment about the perception of what is needed to capture the attention of the American public.
Lately I feel like I need to take a shower after reading Dowd....granted her subjects are creepy too....but why does she waste her time on such low level gutter sniping? None of us need it. We need these writers of reputation to start poking and come up with questions and answers about what these candidates will really do when it comes to ending the atrocity of Iraq, health care for all, a redemption of our world reputation, and oh, right, that economic thing......somewhat more ... Former president campaigning and citing trustworthiness of former first daughter says a lot about the situation - the Clinton machine is impressive, this story reveals more than it says.
The key phrase: "missing computer memory cards" makes this article well worth knowing about. The whole point of voter hacking is contained in the memory cards....will the hunt begin for the vanished cards?
NH took twenty years to pass the official recognition of the Martin Luther King holiday. It is quite likely that this white white white state contains a significant share of voters who would succumb to the Bradley effect. This blog is important because in these times when the integrity of the ballot must be questioned - and Diebold machines are used in NH - the factors that contributed to the drastic error of every poll must be examined.
This article is especially good because it contains so many wonderful remarks from regular people. Racism goes deep in the US, and the Iowa victory for Obama scratches the surface...proof in the words of the average folks who express concerns such as " I just hope he doesn't get shot". The hope for a lot of healing rides on Obama's continued success.
For those that haven't had access to anything but the hype about Ron Paul, it is important to look beyond the surface. Here is some information from NH columnist Susan Bruce: The dark side of Dr. Paul goes largely unreported. He has ties to neo-Nazis and white nationalists. Hes the only Congressman with a 100% rating from the John Birch Society. Paul received the coveted David Duke endorsement. One of his biggest internet organizers from Tennessee is a neo-Nazi. Will Williams ... More »

"HucK" is playing a card out of the candidate GWBush deck, chatting up folks and in his speeches, as with the foreign policy knowledge challenged GWB, the strategy is to make sure it is all about a personality contest; our own version of American Idol appearing nightly in Iowa and NH. The imitation of candidate GWB is comprehensive, as reported in Des Moines:" Huckabee's speech was long on values. It was personal and conversational and, not surprisingly, given what he has shown in ... More »
The value of this story is the insider perspective, and the author's anguish rings very true. It appears to me the answer to who "they" are might be found in between the words: pointing out Bhutto's connection with people, making them feel they matter and the fact that Bhutto's elimination by violence occured under Musharef's watch adds up for students of USA foreign affairs history.
Kudos to the Senator for looking into a situation that is so damaging to vulnerable and desperate citizens; the word "gambling" or "casino" could be substituted for the "prosperity preaching" and the same results occur. The only difference here is "God" is the hook to entice people to give up their money. Remember when RFK investigated the Mafia????
This is an eye opener. The Christmas hook is a good one to underscore just how far down the rabbit hole our government has descended, but there is no magical holiday ending.

Read between the lines, this is an attempt to distort and tear down the Obama administration. Breaking the dominant paradigm of partisanship and ... More »
