The negative commentary certainly reveals the popular addiction to "news" comprised of sound-bites and quips. I watched the debate intently and was delighted first by Lehrer's quote from Eisenhower tying economy to national security, then by his well-focused questions. They gave Obama and McCain the opportunity to address the questions in depth and to demonstrate the qualities of their thinking. In order to appropriately cover the range of topics mentioned in complaints, the show ... More »

This is a DYNAMITE story. Given the magnitude of the current banking collapse and the clamor for accountability, this story should be banner headlines across the media spectrum. It is difficult to imagine that requisite levels of popular support to implement swift and sure accountability would fail with this evidence in hand. Well done.
This and other coverage doesn't capture my reaction to the opening ceremonies. I began in amazement, progressed to mild irritation, and ended with a TV OFF in a disgusted huff after two-plus hours. The mix of gargantuan production far too frequently punctuated by commercials grew to be an extremely tiring and irritating mess. It's taken me a couple of days to figure out the reasons for my reaction and with some reluctance I'll offer them. Whatever their intentions, organizers ... More »
We in Maine are currently dealing with a proposal for a huge Plum Creek development around Moosehead Lake and are only now waking from our slumber to see how they operate. This article is very informative and provides us with much additional insight as to what kind of organization we're dealing with, their connections, and to what means they'll go to get what they want.
A good piece -as far as it went. What is missing, and perhaps beyond the intent of this one, is what is in motion to bring the CIA under more competent scrutiny to maximize fairness and effectiveness while minimizing screw-ups and abuses.
LinkTV does it again and this is a story that deserves much more attention than it is getting currently. The Mugabe regime definitely did NOT "win the election", rather is was a completely corrupt sham, and one the world should broadly condemn as such. The free world, especially new democracies, need to see these "object lessons" to help differentiate malignancies such as Mugabe from legitimate democratic regimes.
If this alarming story is to be taken at face value, American democracy is in very deep trouble indeed. Bone-chilling scenarios are depicted and documented by such outlets as ABC news, ACLU, and local new affiliates of major TV media. I have no idea as to the veracity of the source, but because the events, if true, represent a critical threat to American democracy it deserves an exhaustive followup and a widely published report.
What a marvelous moment of clarity! This is probably the single most important issue facing Americans today. It is a "budget buster" potentially, and this global survey of Best Practice national policies was the standard by which we should judge all proposed health care policy.
This is a very important story. I won't pretend impartiality here, but as a life-long Republican, (until now) I have no reason whatsoever to doubt that the archiving problem and/or the negligence in addressing it, is intentional. This story is just one more example of the utter disdain the Bush administration has for American democracy and the lengths to which they will go to escape accountability. What a tragic state to which We The People have allowed America to descend.
I found this story bone-chilling! If taken at face value, this should raise the extreme danger flag to every American citizen. Placed in the company of Blackwater, and companies of that ilk, we have existing in this country a trained, armed paramilitary force poised for.... what? All keyed on the phrase: "martial law", there are hundreds of thousands waiting for their opportunity to... what? What does this say about the operating paradigm of the neocons and wing-nuts who support this ... This story may be of critical importance to the future of our free press, but I think Jensen himself has a problem. Rather than seeing the Pro Publica mission statement as a general concept that can be expected (hoped?) to morph to meet the needs of current environments, he sees constraints and evasions. He sees "but" instead of "and" in his examples. Perhaps it's just to avoid appearances of a shill. Let's hope so because Pro Publica sounds to me like the last and greatest hope for ... More »
This could be the start of something big. Given the record of actions and behavior of FCC Chairmen Powell then Martin, it is gratifying indeed to see the FCC get well deserved high-level scrutiny. If not immediately obvious, it is none the less crucial that our Public Commons and the agencies that safeguard them are kept under close scrutiny to prevent abuses that can have catastrophic effect on the well-being of our nation, now and future. Read this and rejoice.
Good story, well researched and presented. We need more of this kind of investigative reporting in addition to the fact check type we're so fortunate to have. Our American political process benefits greatly by illuminating the outrageous lies and smears committed by "Swift Boater" -type cancers of all persuasions in our body politic. Keep up the good work.
Good story, well documented and presented by a competent investigative reporter. It's an important story in that it illuminates an important factor to be considered in the conduct of our American education policy. Regardless of moral or religious conviction, the definition of "science" per se is best left to the scientific community, which courts now understand as an overwhelming consensus against notions of I.D. Discussion of the implications of that definition can be continued in ... More »
If this story has the apparent credibility in fact, it is yet another intolerable outrage against all that we stand for as a nation. Apparently the Bush administration continues to disregard opportunities to demonstrate the highest principles of fairness and justice and chooses instead a path that further degrades our democracy and ensures the scorn of the world. If proven true, this case is no simple matter of incompetence. Rather it is another example of rampant, willful ... More »
The importance of the "YOU report -WE decide" concept can hardly be overstated and is hugely under-appreciated. Take a break and try this instructive thought experiment: Imagine how different our election process would look if for the first 3-4 months ideas and supporting arguments were grouped by subject and presented for evaluation with no attribution, a la carte, sort of like wed like our cable choices to be. Effects of money, smears and spinning on voter deliberations would ... More »
An important story given trends in medical costs across the nation. Having had personal experience with 'the system' I can say that the story validates my conclusions. A great companion piece would evaluate the magnitude of the problem in proportion to total cost. However, this and related stories only point to symptoms, rather than root causes for these problem. The real big story would analyze the field to expose corporate meddling in government oversight, legislation and business ... More »
The topic deserves far better treatment than this and so do our citizens. It's disappointing that the editors at the Post allowed what amounts to a trite column filler.
Stated another way, the issue here is not so much the protection of state secrets as the abuse of the system by the executive branch. I find the telecom defense unconvincing since they were well aware of available means to verify the government justification for secrecy. In conclusion, however, the authors provide an excellent 3-point solution for future cases, even if they leave this current outrage unresolved.
Not being a fan of the quick-cut,, esp. raggety ones, it was work to get the message here. It's not the normal mode on LINK, but having stumbled onto Ch 375 on sattellite some months ago, I would trust them to provide solid documentation and accessible presentation on any issue. Copyrite has serious implications throughout the arts and entertainment industry and deserves full-breadth exposure and analysis. This, I suppose was just a teaser.
It's a good story because it provided factual, well sourced information and greatly increased my level of concern. In fact, while reading this latest of may good reports on the topic a strange fear gripped me. After pondering a while the the possibility dawned that most Americans might be so apathetic and cynical that they won't engage even truly crucial issues. Could it be that we're on the verge of throwing up our hands in despair, waiting for somone to come along to "save us"? ... More »
I've only read one other report on this and it upset me greatly. This report is first-hand well documented with actual direct quotes from key subjects. The issues in this report are so egregious they deserve an energetic congressional investigation and hearings. To the extent that this story is accurate, it represents the gravest threat to our democracy, truly as serious as malignant cancer. I will: a.) give this report wide circulation, and b.) send requests to my congressional ... More »
This story is well done despite the difficulty in making it a captivating topic. It's easy to dismiss the subject given the comparitive drama of truly destitute people, but it is crucial that we understand what this indicates about America, now and future: We The People are losing our grasp of the American dream. If there is a weakness in the story, it is insufficient analysis and reporting of the root causes for this sorry state of affairs. Hopefully that may come in the near future.
I may lead a sheltered life, but this is the first coherent presentation of this idea I've seen. At the same time, enraging and frightening to read, it does bear the mark of the folks who engineered the neocon takeover in D.C. This story deserves the most energetic investigative reporting we can muster.
A good compilation of testimony from diverse sources recommending that the golden rule be applied to protagonists of all stripes. Unfortunately, this kind of reminder and affirmation seems to be required frequently to keep the idea alive; a lesson in itself, eh?
A well presented story on a critical issue facing our democracy and economic health with huge implications, both immediate and long-term. Points to action required to correct the debacle and prevent future abuse. Don't go to sleep on this one!
This is typical of biased, superficial treatment of a critically important issue. At a time when American democracy itself suffers unprecidented attack by deep-pocket idologues, oligarchs and corporatists, our citizens are scarcely aware of the scarcity of factual, wide-ranging information available on our airwaves. Further, we're being minipulated to a state of apathy and cynicism about critical, "root cause" issues such as media consolidation and the sacking of our Public Commons ... More »
Unfortunately, this is merely a tiny segment in an extremely critical "big picture" story and the connections were ignored. It is an outrage that corruption in government, one of the two most critical problems facing America according to 2006 voter polls, is getting swamped by less critical issues. Is it not abundantly evident that until corruption in government is rooted out, any meaningful service on behalf of "we the people" will be a lower order concern to most of our elected ...
