This blog provides some comparison on the speed of "new'' and "old" iphone. The case is that the speed of the network is important. The author discusses the different experience he had with various devices and networks to support his opinion that the 3G iphone will drive new ways to use wireless devices. The performance data reported is limited. In particular, it highlights the time it takes to view a video. It does not discuss how long it takes to download a web page, or how long ... More »
This blog gives a personal viewpoint on the status of internet infrastructure in the US. It is very well sourced and provides pointers to those sources. I liked the fact that it presented both the personal experience of the blogger as well as comparative studies of the situation and links to relevant FCC activities. It could be improved by discussing other factors like why it happened, why are people's perception different, does it need to be different ...
A very interesting perspective on how technology is used in nations that are not wealthy. This paper gives multiple examples of different situations with sources from people on the ground rather than high level statistics.
Good story on an important debate. The pricing structure of the internet is very important. It fails to talk about the hearings that have going on at FCC at this topic. It also fails to describe the wide variety of offers that are available around the country. Yet it has the merit of bringing the topic up with a lot of relevant quotes and information.
This is a well argumented piece and an interesting topic. I would classify it as an opinion rather than a special report: it lacks a strong scientific source to back its main assertion, the factual evidence is hearsay not research. The title is misleading too, the claim is not that powerful tools (google) makes us stupid, but the fact that we do not spend much time on longer, sustained intellectual activities. It is more the format of the web and the use of computer rather than ... More »
A very interesting story with some practical applications too. I would have liked to know more about the topic. Is odor a better support than position to help memorize? What if we get both? ... I would also have liked to know more about the limitations of the study.
This blog, like many others , present an opinion. In this case, the opinion seems to be based more on personnal experience rather than carefule journalistic research. Some of the comments bring back some good facts. For a better documented presentation on the impact of broadband and net neutrality on innovation, see for example the excellent presentation by lawrence Lessig at the recent FCC hearings: http://www.vontv.net/events/080417/default.cfm?id=9667&type=wmhigh
I was very disapointed by this essay. While maybe it makes some good points, it fails to present a balanced view of why or how the tribunal was created, or to present the other side of the story, or to show its sources in a credible way. This may be acceptable for an opinion piece, What is less appropriate is the very crude language used to describe some people and the serious attacks that are not weel backed-up by facts. That the facts are outrageous is only one more reason to be ... More »
Very Interesting report and a great idea for a topic. The report is based on actual research that are well described in the paper and the viewpoint of the restaurants is presented too.
While the story does provide some information about the misinformation instances that are going on, it fails to detail the means and the sources of this misinformation. In addition, I would have liked to hear about the true story and the sources of that information.
