The overall message in this article is that the overall percentage of teen pregnacy is decreasing but the ratio of it all continues to be the same. I believe what is missing from this article is the teens perspective because many times it states a general view of what is going on, but there are no comments on what the teens have on the issue and what may be the best ways in order to address this issue. Another issue that I believe that that the article poses is that they also need to ... More »

In this piece, it shows how media effects and how we view one another. Bill Maher in this video mocked Newt Gingrich's comment about New Yorkers in the current primary race. Gingrich called New Yorkers elitist because they live in high rises and ride the subway. As many know, the subway in New York is a means for public transportation for every socioeconomic status- not just the elites. Maher in this clip is blasting Gingrich for his hasty generalization that anyone that lives in New York is an elite. When someone that the general public would assume is well-educated, and well-versed, they would assume that the comments that he makes would be correct without questioning the source. This would effect what we have been covering ... More »

From both what we have learned in class and what we have read in both chapters 2 and 3 in the News in a New America, I believe that this article is a wonderful example of what main objectives we have learned. In both chapters 2 and 3 in News in a New America by Sally Lehrman describes the issues that the media poses when it comes to the various health disparities. The only problem that this article may pose is something that Lehrman explains in chapter 3, "Scientist who study human interactions say this is when unconcious expectations and imagery- the stories and assumptions that everyone grows up with- they can take over. Implicit stereotypes being to limit people's opportunities but may go unnoticed and unquestioned". This ... More »

I believe that this article makes many very important connections to not only the readings in News in a New America, but also many of the topics that we have been reviewing in class. Although this article may not have connections to race, but it has much to do with income level, and gender. It is clear in this article that many of the people that were used as a source such as Nancy Pelosi the House Minority Leader, Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Facebook, and Sallie Krawcheck who is head of the bank's Merrill Lynch wealth management units. "Categories are everywhere" Lehrman states, " Socially, people align fast and easily with what phycologist call our "in group", which can be race, gender, our generation, our occupation, our ... This article frames the idea of health as a personal responsibility. She expresses how she does not see the need in going to see a doctor to find a healthier diet and rather she explored the idea of becoming a vegan. Although it is not considered what she refers to as a "Standard American Diet", it still includes various kinds of fruits and vegetables, gluten-free whole grains, and the essential fatty acids to maintain a healthy diet, in order to heal her food intolerances.

Morgan Mc Clure Comment:

This article covers a very interesting topic of how the much the mind controls so much of what the body does. I think though that the author really needed to add some more information to her article to make her ideas come across clearer If Ostrom were to go into more detail of what ... More »
