This opinion piece,if anything, understates the outrage I feel over the torture tactics of our current administration. Black prisons? Very American. Sticking someone's head under water until they believe they are going to die? Also very American, eh? Beating someone with a phone book about the head? Why it's in our best traditions isn't it? It it WRONG. I was taught that doing the right thing can & often will cost a person. If some intelligence is missed the so what. That is the cost ... More »

Tight writing, all factual statements are attributed, context is strong. Straight reporting of a very high caliber. Attributed example statements are included when a generalized conclusions are made.
All in all a sloppy piece of writing but there are some nuggets you can extract with careful reading. The author mixes up mechanism with expression in the clinical sense. The mechanism of morality in the brain is described by the research. The way any specific moral problem is solved is complex interplay of emotion & intellectual processes in the brain. However this research does not speak any particular moral framework cultural or ordained it only addresses the mechanism. The author ... More »
Well sourced & to the point. The back story here is that all of our predictive capabilities depend on accurate assumptions of future conditions. The data are starting to point to much faster & severe climate change than has been previously thought.
On the contrary Rachel Carson was and is one of the heroes of the environmental movement. No one is the scientific community advocates the resumed use of DDT. This is a terrible chemical & it's effects on the ecosystem are well documented & explicitly spelled out in the article. The article is well sourced & factual. The current administration's penchant for ignoring & warping scientific data has been extensively reported in many publication including the OMB own in house ... More »
The story is indeed poorly written, data is not attributed to a source and the conclusions are not supported by any visible analysis. And I'm not really sure why this piece was written. However the commentary following the article is interesting as the author's sources reply to his assertions and actually debunk his conclusions.
This a fine article. For those who are trying to understand the complex problems of global climate change this is an outstanding piece that trust it's readers to understand the points being made. The article is not "one sided" it is the factual side of the bio-fuels questions. Folks this is the real deal. The effects on food prices & supply are well documented in other places. And they are not in the future but are happening right now.
This is very important subject. All facts are attributed, crisp and to the point writing and there is a link to the actual report.
Typical Arianna rant full of unsubstantiated slurs with just enough seemingly factual statements to allow the the faithful to go along. Waste of time don't bother. Here's the tag line (referring to a clinton spokesman), "If you believe that, I've got some WMD from Baghdad to sell you". Really lovely, Arianna.
This article contains several glaring factual errors and is more of an editorial than reporting. There is no analysis of the proposed "land-for-peace" in the political/historical context. The idea that somehow Israel took land away from arabs is simply not supported by the evidence as is sited in the article. Jews began settling the sparsely populated region in big numbers in the 1890s, BUYING the land from Arab owners. Another factual error: "-made homeless during the 1947 war which ... More »
Waste of time. I guess reporters are so used the monolithic, one voice per party they can't can't get used to a real political party where people speak their minds & work out a consensus (or not).
This well sourced & the authors conclusions are in plain site. A bit inflammatory in style maybe but still solid. There are reports coming out of Mexico that the lack of seed corn caused by US corn producers snapping up the supply has caused the price of corn to soar. So there are already some very real effects being felt. Most discussions of crop fuel sources do not take into account the full cost of production. Phosphate fertilizer run off, water table depletion, lack of ... More »
The interviewer does an excellent job of asking the tough questions & letting the interviewee answer at length. While the story title sounds vociferous Chris Hedges provides a very reasoned & complete explanation of his thoughts. In addition listeners call to comment or ask questions of the author. These are very interesting especially the last caller who is an evangelical pastor.
This interview with President Carter is direct & to the point. The interviewer asks President Carter directly to address some of the criticisms of his new book. There is no waffling by either the interviewer or interviewee.
Reads like the US Military/Ratheon press release it is. As far as it goes this article is moderately informative. However it is not very balanced. For example it does not mention the difficulty or ease of counter measures. the expense of deployment & possible geneva convention issues (are there any? I don't know.), etc. Still as an Active Denial System 101 it's ok.
Interesting summary of the current state of anti-senescence research. Lay person point of view, good executive summary. And as always with Nova very well done.
Very good piece. The person being interviewed is Anthony Cordesman. He holds the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The article is well written, to the point & interesting. The seven questions referred to in the title are the central questions indeed. And he answers very clearly. Read it.
If you want to pump up your outrage over the Iraq war read it, otherwise don't bother. He makes some very sweeping generalization & then proceeds to make his point. Here's one, "If the current U.S. administration maintains its will, establishes security in Baghdad, and succeeds in building a functioning government and army, there is no reason that the Iraqi insurgency cannot be similarly destroyed, or at least reduced to the level of terrorist thugs." If, if , if. If the world would ... More »
The author is the former education minister for Israel so she definitely has a right & the bona fides to speak. There is a great deal of bitterness in her presentation; like I feel when I think of CIA black prisons, CIA kidnappers, Gitmo, etc., ect., ad nauseum. However it started, apartheid is now being practiced by Israel. Its a tough read because of the tone & some sweeping generalizations. Its worth it though. And remember who is speaking.
I am a software engineer. All of the recommendations in this article are industry standard for secure accurate software. The requirements that are laid out here are already used extensively in other types of software. Anyone who is concerned about electronic voting should know these things & ask hard questions of voting officials, providers & court rulings. This article provides a very good synopsis.
We have heard the contrary opinions all to often for the last six years. What's really interesting about this article is that the states, in the face of no federal action, are beginning to mandate their own energy policies to address the various problems of our current energy systems. Arnold keeps suprising me. Industry quotes are interesting as well.
the link is incorrect. Here is the correct link: http://www.interndaily.com/reports/Ingestible_Thermometer_Pill_Helps_Athletes_Beat_the_Heat_999.html
This a good article. It is not intended as a journalistic (dirty word that) piece but as information. As information it is well written, well sourced & acurate. Core contention: Production cost accounting does not include disposal costs & it should. The is known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). As the article says, "True EPR connects producers with the downstream fate (and costs) of their products and packaging... [which] drives eco-efficiencies up the value chain, ... More »
Waste of time. This is not straight reporting. It uses a current as a starting point then using slight of hand & poor questionaire design "seems" to arrive at a conclusion. Bottom line: Don't bother reading it.
Very good synopsis of the findings. Ignore the luke warm attempts to "stir the pot" as in "some questioned the novelty" like novelty has anything to do woth the scientific method. This is quite a significant development in a very fertile field (sso to speak).
Very good stuff. Short & to the point. Take the time. Oh yeah the author mentions: Imogen Martineau, Forum For The Future spokeswoman: "Improve you carbon literacy by buying an Electrisave wireless meter. It takes five minutes to install and could save you 25% on your energy bills. It will keep the kids amused as they see the impact of turning off all the appliances in your home and will put them (and you) top of the class for cutting carbon emissions." I want one. (:
Not a bad read but the main idea is we have a bunch of impulses, desires & appetites that we really have no control over experiencing. What we do have is the ability to say no to them (an admittedly shaky & undependable ability). Does this surprise anyone? The I that is me lives about an inch above my eye brows & two inches back from my forehead. And it always feels like Im riding heard on a bunch of unruly so & sos. Hence the saying I am legion. So what we feel, want & ... More »
Very well attributed, excellent writting style & accurate. Good read on an important subject... "Scare the bejeezus out of the public & you can get away with anything".
Reads more like a gossip email. Lots of unstated assumptions. I was not even sure what the heck she was talking about until near the end of the story. At one point she says,"We're not really sure what that last service entails, but it sounds above and beyond box counting." Is that reporting? Not to me.
It's sort of good & sort of not so good. The basic facts are accurate but the continued references to God particle are silly. It fairly obvious the writer does not understand the subject. He refers to one aspect of string theory but not the basic quandry this research tool (the high energy collider) is addressing.
Very good article well worth the time if you are interested in cosmology. The writer seems qualified to explicate a quite dense subject "in plain english" so to speak. Read it.
I don't see the point of this article. I don't see the difference between Goggle bombing & any other form self promotion. It's certainly less intrusive than automated phone calls, isn't it? More journalistic puffery. Don't waste your time. (If you don't know what google bombing is read paragraph four).
Keith Olbermann is outraged and rightfully so. He is articulate & logical. His opinions are backed up by factual assertion that are fully presented & substantiated. It is quite worth watching.
