This opinion article from the Huffington Post concerns the Latino involvement in our democratic government, and was authored by the Latino campaign director of Campaign for Community Change Gabe Gonzalez. This article is basically analyzing the formal civic and political social capital of Latinos in relation to their votes in our recent election. I thought this article was good because it gave some background information and examples of the social capital of Latinos, which is what ... More »
This article is guided by two fault lines- race and class. It is the latter of the two that should draw more attention, because in this case it is the elite 'class' (government officials/private companies) that is driving the Arizona Immigration law that will directly effect the 'race'- immigrants from south of the boarder. In our culture in the news we value leadership as well as responsible capitalism, but as one can see from reading this article, those two often don't mix without ... More »
Examining this opinion article and taking into consideration the cultural filter of 'selective' perception', I think it would be difficult for the reader to not sympathize with the Latinos of the Connecticut community in question. Although according to 'selective perception' most people will interpret information very differently, but the author of this article uses his language carefully and the reader will most likely view the Conn. Police Department in a bad light. The fault line ... More »
The personal responsibility frame was used for this story. It is an opinion article; the author's view on the Tea Party is clear. The article is still very informative, and it is for the reader to form their own opinion about the Tea Party, that is why I chose the personal responsibility frame,
The story used the institutional frame. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says herself, "Congress must make changes to the underlying laws themselves." Immigration is the responsibility of the government, so the institutional news frame was properly used in this story.
A- The article kind of explained complexities to the issue at hand, which in this case is ‘the would have been burning’ of hundreds of Korans on the anniversary of Sept. 11th. The reason I say “kind of explained” is because I believe the article failed to address a key point- why would Pastor Terry Jones want to do such a corrupt thing? From what I gather it could be related to the building of the Ground Zero mosque, although I am still not sure after reading this article. Minus the fact that they left out such a key point, I think overall the article did very well in explaining the issue as well as the reactions of President Obama and Middle Eastern countries. B- I believe there are other news articles out there that ... More »
A- The article did explain complexities of the issue of death in adult homes in Seattle, Washington. It presented many specific cases of how and why these deaths occurred. The fact is that the issue at hand is not a complex one; it is simply only is an issue because of the neglecting caregivers in the adult homes. B- The article did offer an in depth understanding of the issue. The Seattle Times did an investigative report on this issue and they came out with many solid facts, including the death rates in adult homes versus deaths in nursing homes. C- I honestly had never really thought about this issue until I read the article, so I think that The Seattle Times did a pretty good job of getting clearly getting the facts out in ... More »

This news article comes from a source I have never heard of, The Washington Independent, which makes me feel a bit skeptical on its trustworthiness. Regardless of that, this article provides a wealth of information about the future possibilities for Immigration policy and border control. This promotes social capital because if the reader has any interest in having any say as to who the people are who will govern them; then the reader should want to go vote and support the candidate ...
