Providing counsel is a foundational American value. This article reminds us to look at the heart of the matter in a climate of distortions for political gain.

An easy yet informative read. Simply and factually written. Complicated concepts and history clarified for those who would be bamboozled by those who would attempt to rewrite history. This article renews my hope for journalism and gives me a new respect for the people of Chile.

The article makes the point that because of imporoved technology, people are able to respond rapidly to smear tactics that are being sandwiched in with facts through the AP of all places. In the past people did not know how or to whom they should express their outrage and call the mainstream press into account for spreading obvious unwarranted made-up concerns spread by hate groups. Their cover is to report on what some are saying, so they can use a provocative headline, lending credibility to the story as well as selling news. This article focuses on the "story" about Obama's partiotism that was promoted by the same person that started the organization called C.U.N.T.whose purpose is to smear Hillary. This is the reason I ... More »

Ms. Fisher convincingly points out the flaw in Wilson's assertion that it is unhappiness that produces creativity and offers links to further evidence for consideration. I found the article informative about Positive Psychology, although she didn't offer a comparison to the "happiness movement". It made sense to me that it was an elevation to the spirit through some catalyst that produced the creativity. I have also observed that depression doesn't produce creativity. I think it is one of the defining descriptions of depression.

An opinion strongly based on a small portion of primary "wins" and groups deemed as the three most important, conveniently leaving out other important groups. This writer started with a conclusion then gathered "evidence" that only supported his conclusion. What is more probable is that John Edwards will drop out at some point and his people will be choosing between Hillary and Obama. No one really knows to which candidate they will align themselves. I find the Democratic race to be very exciting.

Extremely fair. A good demonstration of how the courts must rule in ways that force legislative clarity or change. He urges that change by demonstrating the absurdity--a catch 22--for calling into account illegal wiretapping by the president. If you can't hold him accountable because the evidence is done in secret then something needs to be changed. Great journalism.

This is a simple reporting of what the White House has to say. I would have appreciated reading a response to what they had to say. My response is that when a presidency consistently abuses or appears to abuse power it is most definitely the responsibility of congress to investigate. It's the pattern of abuse that requires vigilance. This president was not held accountable until the Democratic congress. It is long overdue and in the best interest of the country.

This article is great. The contrast of what they were saying then to what they are saying now is stunning. Reminds me of what I knew to be true from the beginning. The media loves a war--all that drama, explosions, bloodshed, ratings. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when the war started. I remember every time they said they were inbedded with the military, I would correct the TV and say "in bed with". It still amazes me today that people couldn't see that Bush wanted this war from the first few days of his presidency. Remember the cabinet member who was hushed and then forgotten by the media when he came out with the revelation that they talked about going after Iraq on the second day of the Bush presidency? Whatever ... More »

Thanks to the journalist for gathering all the pieces we've been hearing about and laying them out for us to examine as a whole. It would be scary if I didn't trust the people of this country. Not that we can't make foolish choices, but that we are masters at self-correction. Our system of government provides the way out of our mistakes. I believe you will see a more united America going to the polls in 2008 determined to not make the same mistake and to get us back on course with ourselves and the rest of the world.

Very powerful. Truth stings and at the same time revives our hope. This has the quality of old time journalism, when journalists voiced the outrage of a country. This is of the caliber of Edward R. Murrow speaking truth to the powerful. But I'm afraid Bush won't listen. We know he won't listen. He believes he is ordained by God. What can anyone say to him? We can only talk among ourselves. Impeachment? Do we put the country through another impeachment so soon. Even if the last one was frivolous, who has the stomach for a gut wrenching process that will take the remainder of his presidency to accomplish? Would our purpose be better served to have the enraged public go to the polls in 2008. I believe you will see this country ... More »

"Pardons are typically reviewed by the Justice Department and sent to the president for a final determination. But a former administration official said that in this case the White House had sent a message of 'we’re not going through the usual pardon scrub, we’re going through this one ourselves.” This quote made the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I'm outraged one moment, and startled the next. It was bad enough that Bush commuted his sentence, but that they justified this to themselves by bypassing the Justice department and convinced themselves they could be unbiased over the misdeeds of one of their own (who was obviously the fall guy for the VP). To the reporters credit he didn't draw conclusions but just ... More »

I felt like I was reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" Is this really 2007? You have to think this is going to end somewhere and people are going to come to their senses. But its come this far? How is that possible? I've only heard of TrughOut over the past few days, but I am impressed with the way the facts were presented-- just fact, after fact, after fact, after fact--until my jaw dropped and outrage turned to gratitued for people who have a calling for truth telling. The world is watching because of truth tellers. It's hard to continue something so hideous with the world watching.

I found this piece to be thought provoking. I especially like the suggestion that the non-grand jury package that has already been gathered by Fitzgerald my come to light. I think its true the Republicans would use impeachment proceedings to confuse the issue of what is really happening--better to let their anger build as Bush and Co. continue to make a mockery of our democracy. And to be honest though the title of this piece resonated loudly I don't think I could take another impeachment proceeding--even though this is the president who deserves it more than any other. Maybe Americans can only tolerate one impeachment per 50 years or so. The last one really brought the worst out of the woodwork and fortunately the system worked ... More »

How true. It seems that justice has become impotent under this administration. Thank you for laying it out so clearly. As long as there are some in the press willing to state the obvious when we begin to doubt our own eyes there is still hope of a return to sanity.

This is exceptional journalism because it takes a view that people are aftraid to say out loud. Why is that? Could it be because anyone who dares to question Israli policy is automatically labled a holocaust denier. No reasonable person would deny the holocaust, but I often think of the known assumption in dealing with people who have been abused, that it is not unusual for the abused to become the perpetrator. This conversation needs to be brought out in the open, so Isreal and the US can take a look at what its protectionism has created.

This is good journalism because it made me care about the man, while I deplore him as a president. It made me feel the way I feel about my father on issues in which we disagree. I know he'll never change but he won't be around that much longer so I accept him as he is. I can say that about Bush the man, but as the president he's still in a position to do harm on a major scale. A few days after 9/11 I saw an interview with a priest who was in NYC during the attacks, and he said when he saw the 2nd plane hit he knew that only religious fervor could make a person do such a thing. That is why we see a peaceful George Bush. He is able to justify his actions to himself because he believes what he is doing is ordained by God. Only ... More »

This is good journalism because it presents a problem, then gives 2 examples of states coming up with solutions towards solving those problems. S/he encourages the federal government to support these efforts by passing the Second Chance Act to help those state governments who are willing to break out of the old patterns.

I thought Fact Check was about facts only. I found the commentary and conclusions such as, "That is a significant percentage of our spending, but it pales in comparison to the 46.3 percent we are spending on various entitlement programs" to be unclear. What programs are they lumping together when they say entitlement programs? If you are presenting this as a fact check then list the so called entitlement programs. Social Security and Medicare were cited elsewhere and I wanted to argue, yes, but those collecting Social Security paid into it before drawing from it. The war however is being paid for by borrowed money, some of it from Chinese banks. The point Kuchinich was making was that this war of choice, this unnecessary war is ... More »

I didn't see the debate but had heard that Kucinich had enthusiastic applause for his comments about the money that is being spent on the war taking away from important domestic problems, which he enumerated. I was looking forward to reading the article to get a journalistic viewpoint but Kucinich wasn't even mentioned. I think it is a problem that the media takes it upon itself to weed out the least popular candidates. It doesn't support the democratic process by putting the initial decision making in the hands of journalists. If it's true that Kucinichs' comments had the most enthusiastic applause then it should be mentioned along with his comments.

I only rate one story a day. I read down the list of articles, then decide which one I want to read. This one captured me right away. It's the untold story and it may be the most important story about the war and its effect on the future generation of Iraqis. We will be hearing about this (and dealing with it) for years and we first read it here from the Washington Post.
