Member (since December 2008)I am pursuing a Masters in Liberal Arts, Journalism. I did a six-month internship at the Boston Bay State Banner, a weekly African American newspaper that covers New England. I maintain a few blogs -- one for an investigative journalism class and a personal blog with some public commentaries on various topics and links to my latest articles. I joined NewsTrust because they provide the opportunity to review the best articles, and we have the opportunity to have our work reviewed.

Bryan Bender travels to Puerto Rico to cover not only the reaction of the people when Sonia Sotomayor is sworn in as a US Supreme Court justice, but he reports on why this is relevant to current issue with the status of Puerto Rico with the US, which is not much spoken about in the news, perhaps muffled by the war. Bender shows the context and significance of this: the Island's political status not yet resolved after 100 years.
The island remains fiercely patriotic, sending a disproportionately high number of men and women to serve in the US armed forces, including thousands who have died in wars ... More »
Appropriate since Puerto Rico is on the spotlight these days and definitely the Bronx with Sonia Sotomayor. Jeff Cox's column is a nice description of this Californian Puerto Rican restaurant. Cox does a very good description of introducing the native Puerto Rican food and it compares to other ethnic foods for better understanding of more popular ethnic food.

Though the article is a well-written article, it is missing important information. The article starts to mention what is in the vaccine, really, where it is incubated: in eggs. But abruptly does not finish just leaving the reader with partial knowledge and wondering what ingredients are used. Since the writer started to mention where it is incubated, the article needs to follow up with the subject and add one more sentence or paragraph explaining what goes into this vaccine, ... More »

The article “Organic food not healthier, study finds” appears unresearched. For instance the statement: “A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published …” A SYSTEMATIC review – that is too vague. Who are the authors of the study? Who funded the study? As a reader we want to know who funded those 50 studies. Is there a bias to this study? Is there a slant? As consumers of the publication, we need to know. The reporting reads unfinished. Who is Alan ... More »

This story is relevant at so many levels, health care cost is a major issue, smoking kills many in this country (approximately fifty percent of the smokers) and as the writer points out our bad habits are picked up in other parts of the world. The big story is that regulating this industry was long overdue and unlike other decisions at the senate, this one was bipartisan. The story is somewhat balance exposing discontent with the decision, specifically what corporations see as ... More »

Alice Park, senior reporter with TIME, is department head for the magazine's science coverage. This "article is exploring Sotomayor's disease and consequences." This story not only informs the public about type 1 diabetes, but also educates the reader on what the disease is and how it can be managed. The story is well balanced. Concerns about the disease and longevity are exposed. Expert opinion is added as the “kicker” to the story dispelling concerns about this disease when ... More »

This is a well-supported opinion/argument showing at first an apparent balanced with both sides depicted. For instance, how democrats did the same during the confirmation hearings of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito; however, it ends there. The author exposes, aside from the political bias (if that’s possible) Judge Sotomayor’s accomplishments, and her human side, following the law by the book, which is why there are no concrete accusations against her, but the ... The story is well written and it shows what appear to be both sides of this story -- the court’s, parent’s and another cancer survivor. But that is not the big picture of the story – both Billy Best, who ran away when he was 16 years old fleeing chemotherapy and the Hausers are on the same side. The judges’ court order along with orthodox medical establishment are all on one side of this case. The story doesn't expose the other side of this story -- court/orthodox medicine ... More »
