The journalist visited this school, looked up a lot of numerical data, and wrote this up to paint the picture of a school with a bad rep. Sure, it may have misbehaved in the past, but, they’re making improvements. You can’t expect them to be perfect overnight, it screams at you from the page. The author rejoices in the fresh coats of paint, students responding in unison, and sets of crossed arms marching down the hall. Sure, it is good journalism. It tears at your soul by describing this mess of a school that is trying its hardest to improve, with leaders who make extreme changes and students who are poor with no family support in their education. It is good to see principals who are doing what they can to get their students motivated. I work at a Title I school, and it can be difficult to work with students who lack energy to participate in learning in the morning. Although I do not believe in MSA testing being the key indicator of student and teacher progress, I do recognize it as measuring a student’s problem solving skills, knowledge, and basic understanding of key skills.
