NewsTrust is looking for a part-time web developer to help write our code and develop our site, on a freelance contract basis.

Summary
Develop web pages and code modules for NewsTrust, our fast-growing social news network, and help create a new form of citizen journalism.

The web developer is responsible for the development of key functions of our site, such as search, sign-up or review forms. This includes technical design, HTML web page development, scripting in JavaScript and Ajax, Q&A testing, maintenance and documentation. The web developer will also be asked from time to time to upgrade existing sections of our site. Our technology platform for this beta site is Web Crossing, a popular online community server, which supports server-side JavaScript and Ajax, as well as its own template language (WCTL).

Responsibilities
* develop complete modules, from design to launch
* maintain and/or upgrade existing sections of our beta web site
* write basic technical specification based on feature requirements
* develop new HTML web pages and corresponding code objects
* adapt existing Ajax/JavaScript/WCTL code modules (both client and server code)
* write new Ajax/JavaScript/WCTL code modules as needed
* test new features on multiple platforms (Windows and Mac)
* comment and document code so it can be understood by others
* upgrade and maintain key sections of our site.

Required Skills & Experience
* at least 3 years as web developer for public web site
* strong technical skills, meticulous attention to detail and quality
* solid web programming experience, from HTML editing to advanced web development
* strong knowledge of scripting languages such as JavaScript and Ajax
* knowledge and passion for social media and digital content systems
* ability to respond promptly and effectively under pressure

Preferred
* experience with Web Crossing and WCTL template language
* experience with managing and optimizing large web databases (e.g.: SQL)
* familiarity with Java, C++, Perl and/or other web programming languages
* hands-on experience with PhotoShop, Flash and multimedia authoring tools

This is a part-time, freelance contractor position, reporting to NewsTrust's Technology Director. You will work from home and use your own computers and online connection, on a flexible schedule. We will give preference for this job to active members of the NewsTrust community, who already participate regularly and have reviewed a range of stories on our site.
