NewsTrust.net helps people find good journalism online.

Our nonprofit, non-partisan project provides quality news feeds, news literacy tools and a trust network to help citizens make informed decisions about democracy.

The free NewsTrust.net website features daily feeds of quality news and opinions, which are carefully rated by our members, using our unique review tools. We rate the news based on quality, not just popularity. NewsTrust reviewers evaluate each article against core principles of journalism, such as fairness, evidence, sourcing and context.

NewsTrust's Executive Director is Fabrice Florin, a former journalist and a digital media pioneer at Apple and Macromedia. Our team includes experienced journalists, technologists and community organizers, such as Technology Director David Fox and many talented staff members. Our advisors include Dan Gillmor, Craig Newmark, Howard Rheingold and other digital media innovators from organizations like the Associated Press, Craigslist, Google, the Poynter Institute and Stanford University.

Our partners include leading media organizations like PBS, Scientific American, Huffington Post, Mother Jones, LinkTV, Global Voices, the Council on Foreign Relations -- as well as journalism teachers and students at Stanford University, Northeastern, Stony Brook, University of Nevada and Arizona State.

Our community is growing steadily -- our online traffic quadrupled in 2007, and doubled in the first quarter of 2008, with an average 35% monthly growth. We launched our first public beta site in November 2006, and now have over 7,000 registered members. We've received great press feedback from around the world and our extensive test results confirm the effectiveness of our review process. Based on the strong support we have received so far, we plan to launch an upgraded version of our service in fall 2008.

NewsTrust.net has received a substantial multi-year grant from the MacArthur Foundation, to expand our social news network and bring it to a broader community. We have also received support from a wide range of donors, including the Sunlight Foundation, the Mitch Kapor Foundation, the Ayrshire Foundation and the Tides Foundation, as well as Craig Newmark (Craigslist), Doug Carlston (Public Radio International), Fabrice Florin and other private donors.

Founded in 2005 and based in Mill Valley, California, NewsTrust is funded through grants and private donations. Though we are non-profit and initially funded through donations, we aim to run this venture as a sustainable business, and to generate revenue in the online market to support this project. Revenue streams include online sponsorships, memberships and license fees.
